Modern archaeological research is enabling us to reconstruct the economic performance of the Aegean region from the Late Bronze Age to the Classical and Hellenistic period with a remarkable degree of accuracy. Data regarding the economic conditions of China is generally scarcer than for the West. And, as in all civilizations, the further back in time that we go, the scarcer reliable data becomes.
