Armament Production in WW2

To construct relatively accurate estimates of the value of armaments produced in WW2 I searched for output of the major categories of armaments and related logistical equipment (trucks and locomotives).

Interestingly, the value for armament output in WW2 was very much like I expected beforehand given the respective sizes of each economy (taking into account the fact the USSR lost a lot of territory and so did not have full access to it's economic potential). Still the correlation between...

The Economics of WW2: An Update

It has been over 5 years since I wrote the blog entries on the economics of WW2. Since then I have done some more research on the economy of the world around 1940.

Using a modified Maddison's dataset (taking the 1980 ICP as a basis instead of the 1990 ICP as Maddison used since it's closer to the date that we which to look to, also using Fukao, Ma Yuan (2007) benchmark estimate for pre-war East Asia). One interesting aspect about WW2 is the huge level of military losses suffered by the Allies.

Total military losses in Europe suffered in the war against Germany consisted of soldiers, killed, wounded and missing in battle plus the prisoners of war taken.
