For our Golden Anniversary, my wife and I are planning a visit to Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland for May of 2016. This Blog will follow us from planning to our return to Albuguerque, NM.

I'm new to this blog business, so hopefully I will be able to master at least the basics before this time next year.

We aren't tourist gawkers, though I'm sure we will do some of that. Mostly we are interested in museums, art galleries, historical spots off the beaten track, food, and the lives of contemporary country people. We especially look forward to meeting and visiting with participants of Historium.

Strike the Tent

The oncologist will begin Natalie's chemo-therapy Thursday of next week, and this is the first of six sessions. Each session is followed by a 3 week recess for the patient to recover from the side-effects. The cancer is a Stage III Overian cancer that is very prolific, but we are told that with prompt aggressive treatment she might last five years. Leaving the cancer untreated would result in blockage of the intestine ... basically death by constipation. What a lovely thought.

Crushing News with more to come

Posted April 4th, 2016 at 05:15 PM by Asherman (The Asherman's Are Coming)

We were advised today by the oncologist to cancel our trip, and begin chemotherapy next week. The treatments are spaced out, and will last nearly a year. Side-effects, not withstanding, the doctor seemed optimistic that Natalie can survive at least five years with proper treatment.

The full pathology report should be out tomorrow, but as of today it's firmly believed that she has a Stage III, fast growing Ovarian Cancer. The uncertainty of what the next year will bring is hovering...

Some days ye eat the bear ...

Posted March 31st, 2016 at 03:26 PM by Asherman (The Asherman's Are Coming)

As the details of our trip come together, our spirits rise. Having bought our airfare, our Britrail passes, and our guide/car/driver, we thought we had the fundamentals in hand. Oh what fools these mortals be.

Natalie went in to have a number of hernia's surgically repaired. That should have been a reasonably common operation. Then the bad news. A biopsy of tissue taken confirmed the surgeon's instant recognition of Cancer. Today we were told that the Cancer is Malignant and...

Com'n Round the Mountain

Posted March 28th, 2016 at 07:19 AM by Asherman (The Asherman's Are Coming)

Most of the itinerary is now in place, and we've booked our transportation and lodgings. This week we will finally book lodgings in or around Sterling and in Ennis, Ireland. Suggestions, or warnings??

I've begun running some totals, and this trip is going to be over the budget we began with. Two round-trip Senior airfares to Shannon, Ireland came to $2K. BritRail was $890, and we splurged on the A272 road trip between Bath and Canterbury. That one came to $1,400, but provides...

Tourism on the British Rail System

Posted March 22nd, 2016 at 05:36 PM by Asherman (The Asherman's Are Coming)

Trying to figure out which tickets/passes are best and least expensive for a foreign traveler ranks right up there with trisecting an obtuse angle. I've probably spent more time and energy on this element of our visit than any other. Here is what I think I've learned, and perhaps it will help other travelers.

British National Rail passes and tickets seem most inclusive, and point-to-point tickets seem cheaper. Here's the catch, British National Rail passes/tickets are only sold...
