Chewbacca is a Bigfoot and His Daughter is a Lemur

By Jim R. McClanahan

(Last update: 3-1-13)

Before Melba Ketchum’s DNA study, the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film was often considered the best piece of evidence for the existence of Bigfoot. It remained the unrivaled champion of Bigfoots caught on film for nearly half a century. But an HD video of a sleeping Bigfoot reported in August of 2011 threatened to dethrone it. [1] Screen images reported by the media showed...

Melba Ketchum’s Bigfoot DNA Study: The Questionable Ethics Of
Creating A Journal to Bypass Peer-Review

By Jim R. McClanahan

(Last update: 3-11-13)

On November 24, 2012, Dr. Melba Ketchum, a Texas veterinarian-turned-animal geneticist, released a statement to the press claiming that her 5 year DNA study had proven the existence of the legendary Bigfoot (a.k.a. Sasquatch). [1] According to the press release, “The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch...

Attention: I'm Looking For Primate Folklore

By Jim R. McClanahan

I'm interested in writing a book that collects folklore about monkeys, apes, and prosimians (lemurs, lorises, and tarsiers) from all over the world. They are present in Africa, Europe (e.g. Spain), South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The book (or books if I gather enough material) will be split up according to countries with similar cultures like, for example,...

Archive #7: The 1704 Letter of Pere Gozani

The Jesuit Jean-Paul Gozani visited the Kaifeng Jewish community in the early 18th century. He reported what he saw and heard in a letter to his superior. The letter serves as an interesting example of the west's contemporary negative view of foreign culture and religion.

(I had to use my scanning wand, so the images are a little skewed.)

Chimpanzee Technology and Culture

By Jim R. McClanahan

(Adapted from a lengthy post in the "History and the Natural Environment" subforum.)

Yes, non-human primates have both technology and culture. Chimps, for example, have one of the most extensive “tool-kits” and “tool sets” of any tool-using animal. In his Science article “Chimpanzee Technology” (April 2010), Prof. William C. McGrew mentions that chimps have 20 different types of tools that they...
