Posted September 16th, 2017 at 05:13 PM by Guaporense

The fluctuation of the national wealth of the world's countries has been great over the past century. The World's Wealth & Income Database provides information on the wealth of different countries in constant 2016 euros having datasets of some countries like France going up to the early 19th century. It allows us to map the evolution of wealth available per capita among different countries.

In 1913, the country in the world with the greatest stock of national wealth was Germany closely followed by the US and by the UK.

National wealth in 1913 in billions of 2016 euros:

Germany --- 2,288
USA ------- 2,287
UK --------- 1,708
France ----- 1,086
Sweden ---- 76

By 1937, the US was the clear lead, in billions of 2016 euros:

USA ------- 4,243
Germany --- 1,451
UK --------- 1,209
France ----- 750
Sweden ---- 91

By 1960, the US was clearly the world's economic hegemon with a large fraction of the world's total wealth:

USA ------- 8,539
Germany --- 1,856
UK --------- 1,414
France ----- 1,344
Sweden ---- 216

By 1990, Japan emerged as an economic superpower after exponential growth (it's national wealth increased 20 fold from 1960 to 1990), while China also arose as an important element of global wealth:

USA ------- 25,970
Japan ------ 17,814
China ------ 7,775
Germany --- 6,543
UK --------- 5,092
France ----- 4,683
Sweden ---- 693

By 2015, Japan's economy stagnated and so it's wealth did not increase while the US grew faster than Germany, UK and France but China's wealth increased 13 fold and now it is 1.7 times the size of the US's stock of wealth:

China ------ 100,135
USA -------- 58,454
Japan ------ 18,358
Germany --- 11,227
UK --------- 10,645
France ----- 10,221
Sweden ---- 1,794
