Review: The Secret Diaries Of Miss Anne Lister - Edited By Helena Whitbread

Posted July 14th, 2016 at 05:26 AM by HistoricalGeek

This review will cover the book just enough to hopefully encourage you to read it yourself.

Typed from notes I made as I read.

The introduction as Helena writes it covers much of what to expect from the diaries, including much detail on why she has been the first to transcribe and publish the diaries.

Going into the diaries itself, I appreciate that Helena only interjects when she needs to, so she can explain things.

1816 – Where the...

Review: Genius Of The Ancient World - Bettany Hughes

Posted July 14th, 2016 at 04:59 AM by HistoricalGeek

I’d like to start by acknowledging that the fact that my parents kept these episodes for me makes this review possible. Right, now… here we go.

There are three episodes, presented by Bettany Hughes.

The first episode is about Buddha, who I personally knew little about.

Disclaimer: This review was written over the course of a day and an evening, so the chances of the reviews being a little harder than usual is there.
Any views that follow are my own and I will say this: Elizabeth’s books here may not be the best of the best of her writing, I know two are from her earliest writings and so may not have held up as well.
Book 1: The Running Vixen.
The Author’s Note at the beginning is charming enough.
The book itself is an easy read,...

Bernard Cornwell review megapost

Posted July 12th, 2016 at 05:59 PM by HistoricalGeek

Book 1: The Empty Throne.

Cover blurb sounds interesting enough, let’s see how the book actually goes.

I do like that he has bothered to explain place names and so forth and has a historical note waiting for us at the end.

The prologue is plenty interesting and, for once the plot seems clear and precisely set up. The characters we meet in the prologue are certainly interesting.

The main book holds the same characters and is definitely...
