History is complicated

Posted November 4th, 2011 at 12:10 PM by Iraq Bruin

Yet, it can be very simple.
SYRIA:
Contradictions have been always the name of the game in politics, allies of yesterday become the enemies of today.
Syria for example, since the good event of Saddam removal in April 2003, that government cooperated with Islamists to destabilize Iraq to the maximum possible degree. [see: Blog Entry]

Syrian opposition admits armed insurgents are operating on fringe of uprising against Assad regime - Telegraph

A number of activists at the forefront of the civilian protest movement in Syria confirmed that a bloody attack on government troops in the city of Hama last week was almost certainly the work of extremists involved in the insurgency against US forces in Iraq.

Syria, which opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq that toppled fellow Baathist Saddam Hussein in 2003, turned a blind eye to Islamist militants using its land to cross into Iraq to fight U.S. forces in the years that followed the war.
Some of these violent Islamists stayed in Syria, activists noted. "My fear is that they gave the regime the motive to use force," one of the opposition organizers said.

Quote:
In addition to defectors from the regular armed forces, there are reports of militant fighters – who opposed the U.S. in Iraq on the side of the Sunni insurgency there – returning home to join in the struggle against Assad. The presence of these irregulars could complicate the command structure of opposition forces, lead to uncoordinated attacks, involve the use of improvised weapons that cause unintended civilian casualties, and spread those fighters’ anti-American sentiments to other segments of the population.

LIBYA:
That is that with Syria, now let's talk about the dead Colonel of Libya, at one point he plotted alongside alba'ath to reverse the situation in Iraq (LINK); Alba'ath itself was allied with Islamists (foreign and domestic) to cause more chaos in Iraq. Now, those same Islamists form a big chunk of the movement that toppled and killed the Colonel of Libya [ Libyan rebel commander admits his fighters have al-Qaeda links - Telegraph ]

Now, it is obvious that sometimes governments support elements and entities that will come back to haunt them, yet one has to mention that sometimes, gratitude exists. The Colonel of Libya supported Slobodan Milosevic in his nationalist campaigns [Wiki Links: One and ] from the beginning

Libya's Balkan connections: Qaddafi's Yugoslav friends | The Economist
Quote:
Throughout the Yugoslav war years, Mr Qaddafi (senior) was staunchly loyal to the then Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic. He even aligned himself with the Orthodox Serbs against Bosnia’s and Kosovo’s Muslims.

But not everyone is having a fine time of it. There was much chortling across the Balkans last year when Mr Pacolli took a large party of Kosovars to Libya as part of his attempt to get Mr Qaddafi to abandon his pro-Serbian stance and to recognise the country. At one point the whole party was flown to the middle of a desert to meet the Libyan leader.
On arriving, Mr Gaddafi ordered them to sing and dance. When they ran out of tunes they were reprimanded by an aide. Eventually the good colonel told them they could stop, before dismissing them with words to the effect that he would never recognise Kosovo as long as their leaders remained American poodles. With that, the humiliated Kosovars were sent home.

Numerous pages on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, and other social-networking sites have sprung up over the past weeks to support Qaddafi and link his story to that of the ultranationalists' hero, former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.

One of the most active of the Facebook pages, Support for Muammar al-Gaddafi from the People of Serbia, hosts hundreds of messages from people urging Qaddafi to persevere and recalling Serbia's situation 10 years ago.
Just a small sample of history relevant to current events .......
