Response to slavery percentage question...

Posted May 22nd, 2011 at 01:10 PM by JPC

In the southern states (Population of southern states (15), in 1860 (right before civil war, and after the Mexican-American war) [source: "US: A Narrative History: vol. 1]:

"In 1860 the region's 15 states had a population of 12 million, of which roughly two-thirds were white, one-third were black slaves, and about 2 percent were free African Americans. Of the 8 million white southerners, only about a quarter either owned slaves or were members of slaveowning families...1 out of every 30 white southerners belonged to families of the planter class."

75% of population were white
-66% of whites did not own slaves

-25% of whites were slave owners
--of that roughly 75% owned 1-9 slaves, 15% had 10-19 slaves, 7% owned 20-49 slaves, and about 3% owned 50+ slaves.

2% were free blacks

Slaves made up 32% of southern population (hence why the southern senators were worried about fairness in voting for the white south.)
