Syria/Ukraine - you should not compare them

Recently, you may find very often comparison between the actions of the Ukrainian government and the government of Bashar al-Assad. Also - Syrian terrorists and militias of Novorossia (New Russia in translation). It's not even a comparison, but the direct likening of one another.

However, there are a number of features that strikingly distinguish actions of the Syrians and the Ukrainians, the rebels in New Russia and the terrorists in Syria.

Short hirtory of East and East-Southern Ukraine, Crimea or Why are they Russian?

Little likbez. Territories of modern Eastern Ukraine and Kuban had never were Ukraine before XX century. In time of the Old Rus' they were so called Wild Fields, where the main population was Turkic origin, nomads. No Slavic inhabitants. Only so called Russian Tmutarakan principality existed in Kuban and in East Crimea in X—XII. But I doubt there were many Russians. Since Mongol invasion they became a part of the Golden Horde. And again no Slavic inhabitants, except slaves.

20 years ago, there were happend events which led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. This great country was in deep crisis, but Mikhail Gorbachev tried to save it from a collapse by a new union treaty whis significantly expanded rights of Union Republics. But he has not finished this. Some political figures decided to start a coup. They lacked the political will to finish this job and the local elites were sensed a weakness of the central government.
