Law of the jungle? or a more united world?

Posted March 24th, 2014 at 11:22 AM by Magnate

In my country Sweden the politicians are talking about larger military budget, and a recent poll showed that 24% are ready to take up arms if necessary against intruders.

2 months ago there would be nothing of this talk and if anyone even talked about a larger military budget he would be laughed at.

Russia invaded Crimea and executed a silent and smooth annexation of Crimea (then part of Ukraine now part of Russia). Russia broke several international laws & agreements and did not respect the sovereignty of a country in Europe.

Meanwhile The US and the west been issuing sanctions against Russia and even exluding it from the G8 and the russian economy is shrinking day by day. But nothing seems to change the russian mind.

The rest of the international community and its regional leaders such as China and India been watching all this from the far but still very closely. If Russia can break the rules why can't they?

My subjective take on the re-emergence of Law of the Jungle would be that the leadership of India and Pakistan would operate in such rules with less of regard for what their societies stand to lose than the Russian leadership does today.

While I am still unconvinced that there exists momentum for a political European Union with common foreign policy, the world would be more stable with that development.

To the specific subject matter at beginning of the post: Swedish military technology is advanced and any aggression from the East attempting to disrupt Baltic shipping would come at a cost.

it's only normal for people to react like this even the threat is not that near. if the swedish media had also pumped fear then it makes it more explainable.

I am not blindly defending Russia, but for the record, it is worth noting that Russia is not the only country which violated international law. After all, you remember the Iraq invasion of 2003, don't you?

Better a small earthquake, than great war.
    Or? ...
