If USA wouldn't have atomic bomb, could they invade japan in 1945?

Let's imagine Manhattan project started one year later, then U.S governement hadn't atomic bomb before 1946.
In august 1945, they are in same strategic situation than in real history.
Could seriousely, U.S put up with heavy casualties involved by a Japan invasion?
