Phelps were enroute with their UH-1E Gunship, were speeding along on a emergency med-evac mission in a hotzone of Vietnam. Enroute they received an emergency call on the radio from a transport chopper that was shot up and grounded on a beach making repairs. It was under fire from a number of Viet Cong. The chopper was able to fly off, but four troops were left on the ground, under fire.
