Song China (at least, the southern Song) is the dynasty of China before it fell to the Mongols.

960-1279 was the reign and period of this dynasty.

I think the the northern Song, however, ended in 1127. After that, there was the southern Song.

It was Preceeded by the 5 dynasties and 10 Kingdoms period and followed/succeded by the Yuan Dynasty.

Much like the Han or Tang; it was considered a golden age of innovation, if not a golden age...

Medieval refuge

Posted August 24th, 2016 at 01:23 AM by AlpinLuke

In my hometown, actually hidden on the top of a hill, submerged in a historical quarter, there is a medieval church [mentioned for the first time in a Papal bull to Litefredo in 1132CE] which is a real construction out of time.

Well, I remember the first time I saw it, it was like to use a time machine. The church is built on the rock of the hill and it's made by not well refined stone blocks [there is a section presenting better blocks which has been probably added later].

Here, I will note Chinese developments in astronomy prior to 1600; some notable astronomers, and so on.

By 1381 (if not earlier) it seems the Chinese had astrolabes.

Indeed, I think Marco Polo reported seeing astrolabes at an earlier period.

Medieval China built an astronomical clock (Su Song)

The Qing Dynasty was from 1644-1912

The Qing rulers were of Manchu/Manchurian extraction.

NOTABLE EMPERORS:

Kangxi

Qianlong

GENERALS:

Zuo Zongtang- I used to think general tso's chicken was named after tsao-tsao, but it was actually named after this guy who suppressed the 1862-1877 Dungan revolted in Qing dynasty China.

The Tang dynasty was about 618-907

Tang dynasty followed the Sui dynasty, and from 690-705, was a contemporary of the Zhou dynasty.

The dynasty was followed/succed by the "5 dynasties and ten kingdoms".

Emperor Taizong- quite notable; and considered a frank rationalist. Reigned from 4, September 626 10 July 649

This is when China invented playing cards.

This may have been when China invented gas...
