Cleopatra's Alexandria was superior to Rome

Though I could not find the comment again, in order to quote it, someone stated that Alexandria, Egypt was never equal to Rome.
After having just finished, "Cleopatra" by Stacy Schiff, I would have to strongly disagree with whomever penned that assessment. In fact, Rome was greatly influenced by the spectacular world of Greek Alexandria, but after the great Cleopatra's death, Alexandria torpedoed into decline (within a hundred years).
Moreover, I was amazed to find that pre-Ptolemaic Egypt afforded women rights and privilges that were not seen anywhere else in the world and were even more evident under Cleopatra's reign.
This book was well-researched and I trust in its content.
