Salvador Allende must have struck an odd image wearing the gas mask, bullet proof vest and helmet that he donned during the siege of the Chilean presidential palace. In his hands, Allende carried a Kalashnikov rifle, a gift from Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. The gun bore an inscription “To my friend and comrade in arms, Salvador.”
