In ancient times, Sri Lanka was known by a variety of names: ancient Greek geographers called it Taprobane. Great Britain was called Pretannike nese = British Isles. Iceland was named Thule. Ethiopia and Egypt were also Greek names. While Megasthenes explored India, up to Sri Lanka, Pytheas had already explored Scandinavia, the British Isles and possibly Iceland. Euthymenes sailed around Western Africa, probably visiting Ghana.
