The Arbol del Tule is Mexico's most famous tree. Some say it is the largest in the world, in mass. A circumference of 164 feet gives it the biggest girth, worldwide. The town of Maria del Tule, is named after the giant Cypress, and has a total of seven massive Cypress trees. It is a Montezuma Cypress, the Mexican National tree one of which Hernan Cortez is said to have wept under when the Aztecs defeated his forces on la Noche Triste (the Sad Night).
Long thought by many to be a fusion of several trunks, DNA testing has proven it to be one single tree. Still growing, the tree is 2000 years old and weighs in at just short of 550 tons.
The Tule is honored with a grande fiesta every Oct.7th.
