Alternative History and Its Limitation

Posted June 2nd, 2018 at 07:31 PM by VHS

Alternative History has been a pet topic of many writers, and it can range from fictional to altered historical settings.
Most likely, altered historical settings mean time travel or dimensional travel, in which the mind of a modern character enters the body of an ancient, or a modern character travels to another dimension; these characters usually change history rather substantially.
Fictional world can be setting on Earth or fictional world.
Either way, these writings have substantial limitations:
Writers usually cannot go beyond the scope of their time and world; for example, our lack of interaction with other sapient civilizations limit our imaginations substantially.
The plots usually resemble historical events; even imagination is based on familiar ideas, settings, and events.
The events and historical developments are necessarily simplified; real historical developments are way more complicated than fictions.
Even so, because of our dissatisfaction with history and love of imagination, alternative history is still extremely charming.
