Starting a history blog

Hey, Historum.

Lately I've given a lot of thought to starting my own history blog (outside this forum). I feel much of what I want to write about these days is too specialized to be relevant to Historum - plus, with a blog, there is always at least the faint chance of it producing income, down the road.

Ironically, I'm pretty much a blogging virgin. I was curious if anyone had any recommendations about the best server to use for a historical blog, or any other advice, cautionary tales, etc.

Thanks in advance for your time

I've also thought about making my own history blog.

Happy to see I'm not the only one, Haakbus.

I use blogger.com (or blogspot, same thing) for my genealogy and book review blogs. It's okay - the formatting can be a little buggy and I often have to edit the html myself to get it to do what I want.

Wordpress is the other big blogging site but I did not find it very intuitive.

I use wordpress for my history blog, but I know others use blogger/blospot. I think wordpress looks a little nicer (hesitant to say professional), but both are totally functional. I also see more academics on wordpress than blogger. There is some option on wordpress to tag things and you can see what others are blogging about in the same general sphere as yourself, but my blog doesn't get that much traffic from it. It depends what you want to get out of it. If you just want a corner of the internet to write down history stuff for yourself, that's real simple, but if you want to attract an audience and make money, you'll have to put a lot of time and effort into it.

Also, Weebly would be a good place if you decide to make regular site instead of blog.
And don't expect to become rich thanks to history

Check out your local museums, might be some work or specialist sort of research you can do there.

I used to use blogspot when I had a college football blog. I thought it to be very user firendly and highly personalized.

Would it be feasible to post my work on this site's blog section or Blogger/WordPress? You would have a specialised audience here, and while money would be great, I'm not really working towards it with a potential blog.

Another idea Salah, maybe you could try a podcast? That way you could interview people to discuss things too. It works well for Palaeocast.
