WWII British Shoulder Patch

1 Attachment(s)
Hi there,

I've received a couple shoulder patches my grandfather wore during his service for Britain in WWII, however am having troubles locating the unit that these patches belong to. I wonder if anyone is familiar, or knows a resource a can reference that may help? I looked up the 72nd Brigade, which appears to have lost activity in 1944, however, to the best of my knowledge, he was only active in India following WWII until 1949.

Thanks a lot!

After WWII, many of the regiments were merged. Some still exist like the Ironsides, but others were merged into bigger ones. The Wessex Regiment fought in both World Wars, but is part of a larger unit now. You can try and trace the lineages of the modern regiments, or ask the Army itself for the lineages.

Start with the parent organization, "The Royal West Kent". Apparently, the 72nd Brigade served in India. The second patch reads"72 BRIT IND BDE", suggesting the 72nd was some how independent, or, perhaps "IND" is abbreviation for India. The next patch down shows the unit was attached to the India Command.

I'm sure that some of our other members will be able to expand on that.

Thi is the modern amalgamation of it.

Thanks for the replies so far! I should mention, the Royal West Kent patch is not related. This was a regiment served in prior to his time in India. If I recall correctly (I don't have have his service records on hand), he was with The Essex Regiment during his time in India from 1945-1949.

I used to work in a museum which held the Royal West Kent archives. They had a very active war against the Japanese in India and were largely responsible for the victory at Kohima, if you want I can pm you further contact details.

I'm in Tokyo now. But I'll be back in Kawasaki in Sunday where I have my British army in the pacific books. I've all the Brigade and Division listings there.

It's fairly easy to get info on most things but I can't find much on that shoulder patch.
