23 April 1916 was chosen, may be because 23 April 1014 was the famous Battle of Clontarf. 23 April 1014 was on Good Friday however.

I also liked the second video.

It's a good idea to talk about everything you think is important, instead of rushing things.

Maybe because it was Easter and Christ's rising.

That sounds like Pearse, for Connolly, a may be, the holiday meant fewer Brits in Dublin.

Cheers mate.

Do you feel I'm rushing it?

I'll give you a guys an insight into my thinking:

ep3- planning the rising
ep4- the proclamation
ep5- Rebellion
ep6- British reaction
ep7- punishing the rebels
ep8- aftermath
ep9- the conscription crisis
ep10- 1918 general election

And then we'll be into the war of independence

No. I was praising your decision not to rush. I probably should have said: "it was a good idea". You explained at the end of your video why you decided to do it like this instead of your initial intent and it made a lot of sense. I also liked your explanation for why you allocated the time you did to Pearse and Connolly (why Pearse got more time and why you wanted to also talk about Connolly).

I know about Europe in general during that time period, WW1, British foreign policy in relation to the other Great Powers, and the various ideological currents of the time, particularly romantic nationalism.

I don't really know much about the subject you're dealing with (only general stuff), but I always wanted to learn about it. As I said previously, you're easy to follow and you have a good approach to the subject, contextualising things.

It also works well for people who don't usually study history, because you explain the dangers of presentism and hindsight bias.

You're also well aware of the difference between the nationalism of that time and what happened later in European history. A lot of quotes from the national liberation/unification movements in Europe during the XVIII and early XIX century can sound bad for people who are only aware of the worst types of nationalism.

For example, from wiki: „the line "Germany, Germany above all else" meant that the most important goal of 19th-century German liberal revolutionaries should be a unified Germany which would overcome loyalties to the local kingdoms, principalities, duchies and palatines (Kleinstaaterei) of then-fragmented Germany.” It later became too closely associated with Nazi Germany and considered a way of saying Germany was superior to other nations. That’s why they now only play the third stanza. It's always a huge controversy when people play the first stanza by mistake at sporting events. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsc...nd_translation

Thanks! You're going to make me blush!!!

Thats interesting about the song. Yes, I think it's important to categorise the various nationalist voices of the time into their proper categories. That's why I don't think Pearse was a fascist, though many people have gone on to call him that. It's really not a fair assessment of what was, on the whole, a progressive and humane man despite his rhetoric.
