Did hitler really commit suicide?

Heh, I know in the American history books it says so, but they never exhibited his body to prove it. (Or at least to my knowledge). Anyone know any factual info on this?

I've seen some interesting theories of what might of really happened, but they are mainly based on opinion, and common sense.

All the "eye witnesses" say he did. The Russians claim to have found the body...and then lost it again. Who really knows the truth?

I honeslty don't think a man of his stature would kill himself. It just doesn't seem like the 'thing' for Hitler to do. He might have escaped, but maybe he really did die there by suicide. Who knows?

The Russians did indeed find a body, and there's a published book with that body's post mortem, and also post mortems for the bodies of Eva Braun, Josef Goebbels, Magda Goebbels, and all the Goebbels children. There are dental records, everything. I'm still not a hundred per cent convinced myself, but I tend to believe it's the truth - the book makes interesting reading anyway. (And if you're wondering, according to that PM, the body purporting to be Hitler really did only have one ball...)
As to whether he could have killed himself, there's an account that he experimented on his beloved dog Blondi with cyanide in his last hours, because he didn't believe people telling him how fast it worked. And there's the fact that he was utterly addicted to narcotics, and probably didn't know what he was doing some of the time in the last two years of his life.
And the Office of Strategic Services (ancestor to CIA) carried out a psychological analysis of Hitler during the war and came to conclusion that Hitler would rather kill himself than resign or see the failure of his regime.
Anyone think the scepticism and the conspiracy theory about Hitler's body could partly be due to the Americans not trusting the Russians?

from what i understand hitler bit a cyanide pill and then shot himself a second later. his body was taken outside the bunker and then burned by loyal SS bodyguards and was witnessed by dr goebels. he and his wife shot themselves a day or 2 later after killing their own children with cyanide. their bodies were also burnt i think.

i heard that all the russians found of hitlers body was a skull which their secret police quickly gathered and took back to moscow and later confirmed it was his.

he did kill his dog but im unsure as to why he did it. it may have been, as koritto said, to test how long the cyanide took.

Although, he could've succumbed to Syhpilis, and his followers said he shot himself because any STD was taboo.

The funniest thing for me is, I was watching the movie "Downfall," a couple of months ago. A lot of the people in Hitler's bunker commited suicide, but many of those who didn't lived into the 1990's and 2000's and I think a few of them are still alive. Talk about a bad choice of judgement.

Can,t imagine what the Russians would have done with Hitler if they'd got him alive? But even if they'd found his body intact, they would probably have displayed it in the most humiliating way they could. I think Hitler would have been aware of this and would most likely have comitted suicide and ordered his remains to be destroyed
Wish the Russians had got him though
