Question Advice needed on English soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars

I'm working on a Regency-period manuscript which features an English former soldier, and I've got loads of questions about buying a commission in the Army, the ranks and entering service in early 1815, as well as Napoleon escaping Elba etc.

I'm a novice at this sort of thing, and only know the very basics. Any experts out there who'd be able to help, or any resources anyone could recommend?

Thanks!

Not brushed up on this for a while, but here's a bit on Elba:

SparkNotes: Napoleon Bonaparte: Exile and Escape

The king sent Marshall Ney to arrest him, but he promptly changed sides again - maybe forced by his soldiery - and marched on Paris with Napoleon. It was this event that earned Ney a French firing squad after Waterloo, whilst many wiser marshalls retired to private life either at the restoration or at Napoleon's subsequent return. Very few marshalls were foolish (or loyal to Napoleon) enough to serve during the 100 days. Probably his best marshall - Davout - was left in defence of Paris whilst Napoleon was now stuck with the wooden-headed (but very brave) Ney as second in command!

The Richard Sharpe novels, by Bernard Cornwell, while not premier refernce books, are replete with information about the purchase system. And they are great books.
