Which country was the number one country in the seventeenth century?

I think we can agree that Spain took that position in the 16th century and the French in the 18th century. But who was the number one power in the 17th century? France? Holland? England? I would like to hear your opinions because I can't take a pick.

1600-1630 - Spain but in rapid decline

1650-1700 - France/Holland/England

No we can't

China, Ottomans and Moghuls outstripped Spain by light years. And China, Marathas and outstripped France.

In Europe, I would say between Spain, France, Sweden, the Ottoman Empire, and my favorite: The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

I agree, many Asian/Middle Eastern civilizations were far more powerful than individual European empires.

Did not exist during the 17th century. America was still a British colony during that time and it definitely was not number 1. In fact America didn't really become number 1 until after World War I.
