Re: Constantinople 1453

It was the niece of Emperor Constantine, Sophia (Zoe) Paleologus, who was married in 1469 to Grand Prince Ivan III ('The Great') of Muscovy. Their line, along with that of the Rurikids of old, died with Feodor (Fyodor) I in 1598. She didn't reside in Constantinople, however; she lived with her father, Despot Thomas of the Morea, in Mystra and fled with the family to Rome when the Ottomans conquered Morea in 1460.

Re: Constantinople 1453

Motiv8 is absolutely correct, the Byzantine empire had a lot of glorious days and years after (and before of course) the 7th century .
The emperors Leo III 717-741, Constantine V 741-775, Nikephoros Phokas 963-969, Ioannis Tsimiskis 969-976, Basil II 976-1025, Ioannis Komnenos 1118-1143 to mention just a few, without mentioning a lot of generals who were superior to their emperors, had made it one of the strongest nations if not the strongest nation in Europe.
It became very weak after 1204 with the capture of Constantinople from the 4th crusade.
That it lasted another 250 years it was a miracle. When the Ottomans atacked it was an empire only in name.
The role of the Latins in helping them to stop the Ottomans wasn't on the level.

Re: Constantinople 1453

Maybe Ottoman waited the good time to atack Constantinople when the other european countries were so weak.

If Byzantine had got help from Catholics in the center of the Ottoman occupation it would have been deadly for Turks. Constantinople was in the middle of Ottoman's land.

Efendi, dont forget that ottomans had cannon
Imagen how easy it would be, to destory walls with a cannon.

Catholics tried to help 1444 a crusade against the ottomans, crusaders did won some battles, they even took some citys, yet they were defeated.

Re: Constantinople 1453

Sure Sturm They had cannons as i read a book i can't remember its name. The canon they used was so huge and they could shot the cannon one time in 3 hours.

In the interwall of 3 hour the Greek could mend the wall partially.

I lived in Istanbul for 1 year i visited the Constantine wall many time.

Sturm those wall are hard to breach with its immense structure.
Yet again breacheable of course in any sense.

What i mean is . Can you imagine a huge military power threating the empire in the very centre of the empire? If Catholic could had a military base in Constantinapolist that should be vitally dangerous for Turks.

And the Mehmet I cried Greeks i took the revenge of Troy.(Just a speculation)

Then result i am a muslim Turk.

Walls have weak spots, so they should be targeted.
This cannon, do you know from where turks gather there metal?
From church bells, they took them down from the orthodox churches, melted them, and build there cannon. If the atrocities of the turks have become aware in the west, im sure that many catholic countrys would have attacked the ottomans.

Re: Constantinople 1453

Sturm,

I check the net i couln't find any sources on Ottomans cannons made of Church rings.

I am sure even if they think they did that it wouln't change the issue. Those were the one who raped Istanbul. It wasn't not manner of real christians.

I think everything is/was for money. Religion is just an asavory food with wine on the table. Same all around the world. Very sure for Ottomans too.

Some info, i think it was said by Obama himself

First Muslim Seljuk Turks, followed by Muslim Ottoman Turks, turned Byzantine Churches into mosques, melted church bells into cannons, leveled cities, dug up remains of Christian Saints and gave them to dogs.

Sturm.

What i mean as a source, are there any record on the issue any data, any source, any withness, any explanation.

Yet Mr. Obama may have such an idea, what he said my be true or may not. I don't understand it. İt doesn't mean i accept it or i don't accept it. After all he is a politician he said those for Arab nationalist who has complaint about notorious Central assians like Temur and Ghengis with their turkic armies.

Yet he thinks it is (about Ottomans only) but i don't understand/know why he think it is.

As to say something abaut Christian peasant who lived at that time. There are many datas to show they were treated well in governing too. There were Christian militaries, Policeman, Timariots (fief owners).
