Bavarian and Austrian culture seems very difficult to distinguish between the two. Even the phenotypes of the people seem quite similar. Except Austria has a bit more celtic influence i believe.

austria and bavaria have disparate groups, neither is homogenous, I'm from salzburg, and we are bavarians, culturally, but all of bavarians are not culturally bavarians, like franconians.

for example in english, the capital of bavaria is munich, however in german it is münchen and in bavarian it is minga.

Heh, dragoner, I've chatted to some Austrian nationalists before, and they always seem to consider themselves as the 'cream of the crop' out of the diaspora of German people.

it's funny, because austria has many different groups, though mainly it is vienna vs the country. so if you are talking to a tyrolean or a carinthian, they will have different views. germany vs austria though, well you see it here, it's the north vs south deal. the south is more traditional, cleaner and nicer, but northerners want to make it seem like we are hillbillies.

Tsk, tsk, tsk... Its not that the northern germans try to make the southern ones look like hillbillies. Only the bavarians. Also, they do the same so its all in good fun.

Here the recording of a delegation from bavaria coming to frisia for the annual meeting of the club for bavarian-german friendship.

Sadly its largely untranslatable since its a translation in itself from frisian german to standard german.
"In the speech the mayor praised the leadership role of the guild for the moral upright and responsibile character of the village:"
Mayor: [Vomiting, heavy drinking, screaming around drunk...]
Translator gives as: "Festive togetherness has always been..."

Ah... this is just like here in Oldenburg during the city fest. An excuse to get piss drunk and act like a d*ck. All the while pretending to be civilized and cultured city folk and not the peasants that we oldenburgish really are.

I have been living in Germany for almost two years now, and I've had the chance to live on both the Western and Eastern side of the country. Its interesting to see how the effects of the wall can still be seen today. Western Germans resent the fact that they had to help prop the Eastern side back on its feet. Now, the eastern side is prospering at a higher rate than the western side, but yet they still receive payments from the western side of Germany. The Eastern Germans very rarely talk about what has happened in their recent past, but the Westerners seem to talk about it more. It has definitely been an eye-opener getting to see the history here for myself!
