Isn't it a little ridiculous to suggest 'ethnic' clans exist in Europe? Especially Spain. Are they trying to claim that their entire ancestry can be traced back unblemished for 1000 years? Even then they'd still have another 1000 years of Roman, Greek, Gothic and Persian bloodlines to contend with.

Why is it that its perfectly acceptable to think of non-Europeans as having ethnicities, but not for Europeans?

Because we are obsessed with blood and genetic fantasies when speaking about ethnicities.

Speaking as a member of one of these 'ethnicities' I can say that there are thousands of them, and most of the people involved put their livelihoods first and their language second. That's why activist attempts to 'restore' languages often fail: the people who speak them don't care.

Fortunately, with Gaelic this generation is more confident than the last. They don't have the cherished memories of being beaten up at school for speaking their native tongue. But other European languages without a diaspora to fuel their national pride where the community is not so passionate about their heritage? No: they won't last.

I'd say they were cultural minorities, not ethnic. There's no way someone's forefathers married people of the same race for over 2000 years, unless they live on Christmas Island (or The Ilse of Sheppey).

In Europe, especially Western Europe, it would be largely impossible because of the great migrations, Roman colonisation, Vikings, Saxons, Goths, Vandals etc etc. Then look at the massive population increase from across Europe with countries of a few hundred thousand in 1700 to millions by the 1900s and the steady movement from country to town. They'd hardly remain with the same people let alone 'racial group'. Not to mention most people can only trace their family tree back a few generations anyway, once you're off the Church records you could be related to anyone.

I'm Count Bohemond of Taranto's great, great, great x 12 grandson by the way.

Is "European" an ethinicity ? Because if it is, we may have an answer to the question.
