Since the currently displayed stone has been described as looking like the lid from the septic tank, I find it hard to believe that this is the genuine stone. It does indeed look like the lid from the septic tank.
The only valid arguement for its genineness is that Bruce had been to an earlier coronation (Balliol) and therefore knew what the real stone looked like and thus would have used it if available for his own coronation. Possibly it had been hidden, probably buried on the approach of the English army and its position was not known to Bruce and therefore now lost forever.
