Europe, year 1900

Hi,

here is a map of Europe from year 1900:
Euratlas Periodis Web - Map of Europe in Year 1900

I have a question about the map:
- is Egypt part of Great Britain?
- is Cyprus part of Great Britain?
- Algeria is French?
- country in blue between Germany and Belgium is Luxemburg?

Regards

As of 1889, I believe, Egypt had been in a protectorate/vassal state with the United Kingdom. They were given their independence, but the British kept a fairly tight control over what occurred out in Egypt. Especially anything that involved the Suez Canal.

I do not know...

Yes. Algeria and much of West Africa minus Nigeria, Ghana, and some other areas, were a part of the French Colonial Empire. Here is a map.

Yup. There is the Duchy of Luxembourg.

Light Green, on my map, is post, I'd say 1875. Dark Green is pre-1800.

As far as I know the French only kept outposts in India. They didn't commit to an actual take over of India like the British East India Company did during the 1830s to 1880s.

Balkans map is inaccurate, with approximately the 1913 borders.

Algeria was 'part of' France surely from 1848? Rather than a colony. Hence the added bitterness surrounding independence and the war etc.

Cyprus was ceded to Britain from Turkey/Ottoman Empire in 1878 as a diplomatic bribe at the Conrgess of Berlin where German leader Otto Von Bismarck played the 'honest broker' when Turkey Russia and Britain met to resolve the 1876-77 war between Russia and Turkey after the Turks carried out massacres of Christians in Bulgaria..
Arch British Imperilalist and British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli saw a chance to make some territorial gains and Bismarck wanted to buy off British intervention in a European matter by backing Cyprus being ceded to Britain.

The French did commit to actual conquests in India. It is a different matter that they didn't succeed.
