Ah, some will never appreciate their civil and religious liberty, even when they're using it to profess their beliefs

The liberty given to native Irish people under William and Mary was surely a bit limited? It is a bit like American free speech - okay if you are a rcist conservative with money?

Not perfect by any means but the Act of Toleration is a huge step forwards in Britain becoming the society it was destined to be, just like Magna Carta or the Declaration of Independence or the reform act, Catholic Emancipation, the abolition of slavery, universal sufferage, the legalisation of homosexuality etc

I'm neither British or Irish so i hope you don't mind me answering too.

I think he's the best Dutch leader we had and defionately my favorite one. I know if the British people share my high opinion of king William though.

The reign of King Billy was the beginning of many aspects of the modern world - Constitutional Monarchy, the Bank of England, etc - a lot of the things we, and other countries, take for granted. Not so much for William himself, but the circumstances (totally illegal though they were!) that made him a king with limited powers.
He was smart enough to keep a coalition together on the continent to fight the French, and stupid enough to let the Anglo-Irish nobility run Ireland, which made him a swear word to the Catholic Irish nobility, and anyone who has listened to them ever since.
Billy was indeed supported by the Pope - not even he (unlike the Irish) was stupid enough to support James!

Won rights for some Irishmen, condemed others to oppression. +1 -1 = a bit of a zero in my opinion.

A world without Kings or Popes would have been a very fine world indeed.
