1500s England Clothing/food

Please can you tell me about the clothing for men and woman during this period?

I'm more interested in the Royals/Royal court styles at the moment.

Also, can you tell me what they ate? I understand that fruit/veg wasn't common, and small ale was drunk rather than water. What else?

It's info for a novel, so descriptions would be awesome

Need more detail here. Court fashions changed dramatically from 1500 to 1599, what date range are you interested in? I’m also assuming you need information on Tudor England? English court fashion tended to follow either French or Spanish fashions, as did Scottish.

Catherine de Medici revolutionised French cuisine when she imported Italian chefs into the French court and this percolated to other parts of Europe and to a lesser extent, the British Isles who tended to be more conservative in their tastes

Thanks- I'm not sure of a spercific time yet. Mid 1500s (40-60s) is the time range I'm leaning towards.

For food preparation and consumption in the grand houses of the sixteenth century, try the chapter on Tudor Britain by Peter Brears, published in A Taste of history, 10,000 years of food in Britain. Ed Maggie Black, published by English Heritage in association with British Museum Press, 1993. Culinary culture changed through the course of the century for the elite, the biggest change was probably the importation of more sugar from the West Indies, this let to an increase in tooth decay, and the treatment for the discolouration of teeth included the application of nitric acid, which to much of may force a lady to ‘be forced to borrow a ranke of teeth to eate her dinner, unless her gums doe help her the better’. There was also the importation of exotic foodstuff from the New World, such as the tomato or ’love apples’, kidney beans and the potato. The turkey bird would seem to have become popular quickly and by mid century were to be found in London markets. For the majority of the population food tastes would have changed more slowly and remained that of wholesome peasant fare.

Out of curiosity, why would you want to write about a period you don't seem to know much about?

I really have no idea. This idea came to me and won't leave me alone. I need to write it to get it out of my head.

I usually write SF and horror, so it's quite a change!

Try reading more of Elizabethan literature then, should help. Not Shakespeare, necessarily.

See if this link is of any help.
