Perhaps, the thread title is misleading viewing from result of the discussions. It should had been why did Prussia go extinct and Germany and Poland survive.

I don't usually react to baiting and insulting posts like Eli's. I hope that from my own writing it is clear that I disagree with it. I have a great respect for the Polish people, its culture and achievements, and it is not my aim to downplay or justify the crimes committed by Germany.

Yeah, I don't let it bother me. I know well the negative things being said about the Americans. I'm not stupid. Grimald faces it too. Interesting to hear such a foul, rotten speech. His first post and hes suspended indefintely. Bad start, I'd say.

I often thought language would decide someone's nationality, but from this discussion, it would seem thats not always the case. Then I thought the name determines the nationality. To indult each other is to insult yourselves. Fascinating!

I think that we Poles already heard all those things during nazi occupation between 1939 and 1945.

The new thing is about those hundrieds thousands of Germans who died defending Poland

@Mosquito

As an aside has there been in the past a thread on Polish revolt of 1830?

If there was a sincere concern about Russian repression of Poles on the part of the Prussians then 1830 would have been a much better opportunity than 1914-1916 to take action towards liberation.

Martin Luther is known for spearheading the reformation of Christianity. With such situation, was there any effect of such phenomena over the Prussian culture and sense of nationalism?

It's one of Germany's 3 city states: Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen.

They tried to merge the states of Brandenburg and Berlin in 96 (if I remember correctly) but people in both states voted against it. Berlin likes to be a state on it's own and doesn't want to be part of "rural" Brandenburg, Brandenburgers on the other hand like quirky Berlin much better if it's "surrounded by us".

Actually people from Bavaria sometimes do call us Berliners "those damn Prussians", of course we don't mind

Wow this thread has grown while I was away, I need to catch up. I'll be back on my pc on Monday.

I like to hear stories of Berliners and Muncheners. I think 50 years of the iron curtain was long enough for that part of Europe. Like Grimald, I am optomistic for the future.
