Perhaps, but highly unlikely. The romans had an unhealthy diet, so they were short. Similarly, the dutch is very short at von gogh`s time because they were poor, and nothing to eat. Look at them now. Descartes used to say beautiful franch women were rare, and i suspect, the french at that time were piss poor, so again they had a bad diet. For romans, they had an bad died, and don ` t exercise as much, so they go out of shape.

The Romans had a far healthy diet than the Gauls at the time.

i agree with the fair skin thing, but this is true for so much of the world. Fair skin people don` t have to work their ass over making a living, unlike much of the world. "fair skin" were seen as status symbols.

no, the average romans were piss poor. They live in subhuman living conditions at their house at night, so they had to spend the day in public bath houses. Also, alot of the romans were slaves, so they might not be in top physical conditions

What this means is that you rather be a celt, than a roman at that time. They die early, got nothing to eat, and had to live with slave wages( if at all).

Romans WERE NOT slaves. That was the reason that there were such collosal spendings to keep them entertained. (the slaves from abroad did all the work)

Perhaps the Romans reckoned that the Celts and Gauls were possessed of an exotic sort of beauty? Perhaps the blond hair thing led them to overlook a certain plainness that they wouldn't have missed in one of their own kind? Perhaps the Celts and Gauls were taken aback by the exotic(to them) beauty of the Italian women?

(Full disclosure: I'm part Scottish and I think Italian women are beautiful.)
