Spanish History - Aztec/Mayan influences

Hey guys,

I was listening to some history lectures from UC Berkley the other day, and the lecturer mentioned that Spanish musicians were imitating Aztec musical style and bringing it back to Spain and starting a new musical trend. He also said that this music was eventually banned because it was believed it caused sexual desire.

Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Spanish music was plainly full of Arabic influences already. I've never heard of Aztec or Mayan influences, but possibly, the Spanish musicians may have just been claiming these influences to make their music seem more "exotic"?

Surely Spanish musicians picked up a few pointers, that makes perfect sense. And it makes total sense that the new flavor of music being was banned by the Catholic church as different.
