Viking Settlements to Modern Cities

The modern city of Dublin,(Irish) Duph Linn, (Norse) Dyflin, was originally created by Norse invaders around 841 BCE, with the Norwegian Turgeis proclaiming himself as "King of all foreigners in Erin.

With Dublin being the capital of Ireland, I was wondering what other originally "Viking-in-a-foreign-land" settlements still exist as currently large, bustling cities?

Right off the bat, YORK this is the modern name of the Viking JORVIK, mind you , to the Romans it was Eboracum and to the Anglo-Saxons it was Eoforwic.

The similarity of the names Jorvik and Eoforwic suggest a close relationship between the Vikings (mainly Danes in England) and those who came before...

Chookie,

being from Scotland, are there any other cities or successful towns outside of anything in the Orkneys too atribute to them?

Ooh yeah, hundreds. Mind you, I'd have to worry about your definition of a city as we only have five.

On the mainland (that's Scotland, not mainland Orkney or mainland Shetland), starting at the top and going left, you've got Scrabster, Durness, Kylesku et cetera. Almost half the village / town names in the Hebrides and the coast of the western highlands are either purely Norse or are composite Gaelic-Norse words.

An additional difference between the Scottish and English experiences of the Vikings is that, in Scotland, most Vikings were Norwegian or Icelandic (this is probably due to ocean currents and proximity).

Add in Ulster, Munster and Leinster too. All composite words. e.g. Muman-stadr = Munster.

I do believe that Reykjavik (Iceland) was an area that was originally settled by the Norse in the mid-9th century.

St Anthony Newfoundland was also the site (or very near the site) of a Viking settlement, although I would certainly not describe the town of 2,000 as a modern city haha.
