I used to think that the Ottoman Empire had been started by Otto von Bismarck. this was way before i learned that the ottomans were turks and even before i learned who bismarck was

I used to think the American Civil War was about only freeing the slaves.

Re: your historical misconceptions

I was once under the firm impression that Winston Churchill's strategy of forcing the Dardanelles in WWI was a hopelessly misguided idea that reflects negatively on him in the extreme. In my University days I even wrote a paper on it based along those lines.

These days I have done a complete about-face. I would now argue fiercely that Churchill's plan for the Dardanelles was brilliantly concieved and reflects the utmost credit on him - it was the blunders of other men (especially Kitchener) who should have known better that brought the plan down, and Winston became the scapegoat.

That might count as an "opinion" rather than a misconception though, especially since many people do continue to hold my original view.

So I'll call up another one to do with Churchill. Casting my memeory back much earlier even than University, I can remember a point when I was Elementary School (I believe I might have been in fourth or fifth grade) when I was under the impression that Churchill had been the Prime Minister of Great Britain during WWI as well as WWII. Quite embarrassing to say the least

Re: your historical misconceptions

I was always of the opinion that because we are in 2010, that 2,010 years ago was 0. However in 1989, a television quiz show asked "What was the day after December 31st, 1BCE?" to which the answer was "January 1st, 1AD" which prompted a 25 minute discussion the following day in our history class.

I had always believed that Maximinus Thrax had killed Gordian I and Gordian II in battle. Turns out I was wrong.

Re: your historical misconceptions

--> I used to think that men during the 1700s had magical hair. One minute it'd be normal hair and another minute, it'd be white and poofy. Took me a while to see that it was just powdered wigs.

--> I thought there was actually a boy in the Dark Ages named Arthur who pulled the sword from the stone. (I watched the movie when I was young, so sue me. XD)

--> I knew why Hitler did the Nazi salute and the whole thing with him and the facists party, but one day, I saw a picture of him and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini BOTH doing the Nazi salute and I was dumbfounded as to why Benito was doing it and assumed he did it because he wanted to appease Hitler. Took me a while to realize that he too was a facist.

--> I thought John Hancock did his signature so large because he wanted King George III to see it when they sent it to him. (Yes, I thought they were going to hand the Declaration over to Georgie III)

Re: your historical misconceptions

As a child, I remember watching a film about WWI and seeing people moving very fast in the film and for awhile though that people did move faster in those days. Later I found out that was a side effect of the differences in speed that the projector was moving and they have corrected this problem today.
Here is a more scientific expalination.
