The fall of Constantinople in May 29th. It helped mould my current anti-imperialist views that eventually led me to Maoism. I was fascinated by the Muslim Ottomans and how a non-European defeated and conquered one of the most important European cities despite growing in what can be described as a middle class, Westernised environment that saw everything non-European as foreign and exotic. Add to that how I grew up knowing about European colonialism and with the same name as Alexander the Great, and such an event of historic importance to have occurred on your birthday gave you quite a lot to think.
