two volumes came out so far from the The Cambridge History of Inner Asia.

I also liked other writings by Peter Golden, these two are more general:

- An introduction to the history of the Turkic peoples: Ethnogenesis and state-formation in medieval and early modern Eurasia and the Middle East

- Central Asia in World History

And you cant beat the price--it's free. Its a great starting place for newcomers.

There's also the Historical Atlas of Central Asia by Yuri Bregel (not free) if you want maps to go along with the text info.
