And we cannot see what's under the surface, like in many occasions historians have got terrible difficulties in finding out what's under the visible facts of a certain "dark" period!

Exactly!

I spent some time recently looking up Umberto Eco. Pretty interesting fellow - The Name of the Rose looks intriguing.
What would you suggest as the best general introduction to semiotics and culture theory?
