The 20th century: A century of global brainwashing without precedent?

Hello,

I wwas thinking about the influence of tvs and radios in our lives when i came up with the following question... sinc ebefore the 20th century there were no tvs, or radios...

Isn't the 20th century the century were there has been more brainwash??? Since in earlier times there wasnt tvs or radios to brainwash people in the first place. (I mean, there were ways of brainwashing people, but just not as powerful and expansive as Tv and radio.....)

Well I am confused as to exactly what you mean by brainwashed, but I'm going to assume you mean having our minds rather controlled or highly influenced by all these entertainment mediums?

I would have to say yes, we are. Our mindsets are shaped by all this electronic stimulation around us. Those who direct and plan commercials work solely to "brainwash" consumers. But then again, these mediums (the internet, particularly) give us more freedom of speech and let us express ourselves and present our own opinions so in that was it is safe to say that it makes us more open-minded and freewill-ed in some ways. So there's not much of a black-and-white answer.

Brainwashing as you apply it , is an effect of ignorance. The more ignorant the person the easier it is to affect what he thinks, does and believe.

TV's and social media are tools to enact your "Brainwashing" but only if the people are ignorant enough. Before this century yes there was no TV no radio no Internet , but word of mouth was used to the same effect and far more successfully .People in most areas didn't have the tools to educate themselves. If you consider TV to be a "Brainwashing" tool then the internet would be the "anti brain-washer".

............"anti brain-washer" .. what the .....

You think the 20th Century was bad wait until we get to the end of the 21st Century

It a double edged sword, and you can argue either way. More exposure means you can get your message to more people on a regular basis, but that same medium can help those people to develop a different understanding through the expression of alternative concepts. It comes down to how willing people are to believe what they are being told, and how motivated they are to dispute it and find out for themselves.

So yes, I agree that the medium is powerful, but it can backfire on itself, because of all the things that come with it. Generally speaking there is a higher level of education now, which makes people more inclined to be skeptical. But this technology can lead to complacency and laziness....
When a peasant in Ancient Egypt is told that his Pharaoh is a God or that the earth is flat, he can't really dispute it.

What was planted in the 20th century, is growing well in the 21st.
People today watch a media outlet they enjoy for whatever reason &
they search out blogs/websites that they agree with. Your reasoning, via
media, will be determined by who you have chosen to trust.

Do you really suppose that Governments set about brainwashing, only since TV and radio were invented? Before it happened in churches, where a priest explained to his flock, what they had to think. In my opinion, this way of brain-washing is less hypocritical.

Your teacher says you must write that on the "chalkboard" one hundred times. You still have 94 more to go.

I like that, that's funny!

Posted below is a 4 hour BBC documentary. I advise downloading it for further watch.. but for the purpose of this thread, watch 5 or 10 minutes of it.

It is about Edward Bernays the father of public relations (brainwashing) The science of mass persuasion. This film is a must..
