History amended by earliest recording of sound

History amended by earliest recording of sound - CNN.com

Quote:
Thomas Edison came up with a way to play back recorded sound in 1878. But 20 years before the inventor patented the phonograph, French scientist Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville was fiddling around in his laboratory trying to come up with a way to record sound. His invention, the phonautogram, enabled him to create a visual representation of his voice.
Quote:
Scott de Martinville wasn't able to listen back to his recordings, though. The science of acoustics was in its infancy. He could only see lines etched in soot. His achievements were long-forgotten until a group of historians, audio engineers and scientists searched for his work. The First Sounds Collaborative found it in the archives of the French Academy of Sciences in 2008.

Has everyone seen this TV blooper? It's a device by Edison.

In any event, early sound recording or playback devices are just an amplification of grooves. A needle passing over grooves to create a sound, which is amplified.

It would probably be impossible to credit the original discovery to any single person. Jmo... The patents being something different, as to my understanding a sound device made of wax might be an entirely different invention from one made from vinyl.

Or an obscure method in a foreign country might evade proper patenting and/or promotion in another country.

These guys have "Talking Tape" which I think is pretty interesting and exactly along the same lines as early sound device recording.

Nikola Tesla was just like Edison, in fact if you look at this list patents, they are equally unremarkable in regards to discovery, or invention, but perhaps more along the lines of innovation on existing techniques and technologies.
