I've noticed a lot of members here are extremely passionate about certain time periods and certain historical characters... Soooooo
What's your historical passion and how did it start?

My primary interests: Imperial Rome, with emphasis on the 161-235 CE period The American Civil War Jewish History African-American history, with emphasis on the black presence in the military
My secondary interests:
Medieval Islam, emphasis on the 12th and 13th Centuries
Polynesian cultures, emphasis on native Hawaii
Victorian Britain
The World Wars
North American Indian cultures
The Franco-Prussian War
The ancient Celts
Republican Rome
The Sassanid Persian Empire
Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica
African history, with emphasis on the 19th Century
Medieval Japan
The Ancient Middle East
It's actually hard to pinpoint how any one of them was inspired; historical interests multiply exponentially for me - for instance, interest in the American Civil War led to interest in the near-contemporary Franco-Prussian War.

I'm particularly interested in chaos and collapse, as well as religion and its role as a propagandistic tool of the state. I focus on these themes in the fifth-eighth centuries in the eastern Mediterranean. Like Salah, I have many interests like Hellenistic naval warfare and the Ottoman Empire to name two but I only claim moderate expertise in this one area and prefer to put most of effort into it.
