Battle of Verdun and Iwo Jima were some very good examples of how the Christian image for hell would be like. I can not imagine the feelings of the people who fought there....

i could sit here and quote a number of extracts from Antony Beevor book Stalingrad on things such as the battle for the grain silos, the soviet blocking detachments that waited at the landing area for anyone who decided to run, the numerous messages scrapped on walls by soviet soldiers of "farewell comrades we did not surrender", the shell shocked state of most german soldiers, the constant fights that ended usually in bayonets or entrenching tools being used at close quarters, the horrifying conditions for the germans once they were encircled of starvation, disease and the biting cold.
but i won't because its late now and i'm too lazy to go looking through the book for all the extracts and then painstakingly copying them out so instead i'll let these pictures speak for themselves and the veterans themselves tell the story.

Guadalcanal. I think the effects of the climatic conditions and associated diseases were especially harsh on the US Marines. Especially when these effects were compounded by lack of supplies and medical treatment early on due to the forced abandonment of naval supply vessels after the Savo Island disaster.

Peleliu. Another Pacific island hell-hole of little value that cost US forces dearly. Daily temperatures during this battle routinely reached 115 to 120 degrees F. Fresh water was extremely short due to the blunder of shipping the water in used oil drums that were not cleaned out, poisoning this supply. Unanticipated tactics used by the Japanese in defense effectively destroyed the 1st Marine Division in a battle that was expected by US command to last less than a week, but was bitterly fought for over two months.

And how about the conditions suffered in Burma and New Guinea, particularly by our Australian friends. Probably the worst and longest sustained conditions of the entire Pacific War.
