Lightbulb On this day in history

hi Historians and history lovers,

I have a huge collection of 'on this day in history' facts and thought I'd share them here hoping that it will be of interest to at-least some of you. Please also feel free to post any other such historical facts 'on this day' if you would like to share them as well.

Please note that all the text/description surrounding the events I post in this thread is taken from the relavant Wikipedia articles.

To start this, here are some popular events 'on this day' facts for 10th October:
  • Xinhai Revolution: October 10, 1911 – February 12, 1912
Also known as the Revolution of 1911 or the Chinese Revolution, was a revolution that overthrew China's last imperial dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and established the Republic of China. The revolution consisted of many revolts and uprisings. The turning point is the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911, that was a result of the mishandling of the Railway Protection Movement. The revolution ended with the abdication of the "Last Emperor" Puyi on February 12, 1912, that marked the end of over 2,000 years of imperial rule and the beginning of China's republican era.
  • Battle of Karbala: October 10, 680 AD
Took place in Karbala (a city in Iraq) between the family of Prophet Muhammad and the much larger force of Umayyads. All of the supporters and family of Prophet Muhammad were killed and the women and children taken as prisoners. The dead are regarded as martyrs by Muslims, and the battle has a central place in Shi'ah history and tradition, and has frequently been recounted in Shi'ah Islamic literature. The Battle of Karbala is commemorated during an annual 10-day period held every Muharram by the Shi'ah as well as many Sunnis, culminating on its tenth day, Ashura.
  • Siege of Antwerp: September 28 - October 10, 1914
Between the German and the Belgian armies during World War I. The German army invaded Belgium on the morning of August 4, 1914, two days after the decision of the Belgian government not to allow German troops unhindered passage to France. The Belgian army found itself desperately outnumbered by the Germans and was limited to conduct a fighting retreat from the onset of the invasion finally retreating to Antwerp. This battle ended on the 10th of October 1914 by the mayor of Antwerp, Jan De Vos, offering the formal capitulation. The city of Antwerp would remain occupied by German troops until November 1918.

Please don't ask my sources. They are various websites on the Internet. I do not claim to be correct and if I am not required in this thread do let me know. I'll make a lightening exit without making a self-righteous post.

The British subjugated the islands as a colony in 1874, and the British brought over Indian contract labourers to work on the sugar plantations as the then governor and also the first governor of Fiji, Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon (aove), adopted a policy disallowing the use of native labour and no interference in their culture and way of life. The islands would gain their independence in 1970.

I think a link to the source will improve the credibility of the information. Like I said all my posts are based on Wikipedia and when I am out of the forum 'probation period', I will add the Wikipedia links. I am not sure if this has to be a requirement (if its not something the forum mandates) as it might put off people contributing to this thread. The more the merrier for me

I also think that a bit of description around the facts will make the facts more interesting and informative for a casual reader.
