@ astafjevs: You're still standing! Dorling Kindersley is geared more toward younger readers, but I'd agree that it is a solid reference. I highly recommend it for any parents in the 'room'.


I can't speak on the Stearns encyclopedia either, but the Oxford is a very good pick. Oxford also has a world history atlas edited by Patrick O'Brien.

I can recommend this book, it's quite famous to so you would read it sooner or later.

"I would like to emphasize that this book isn't thought of and wasn't ever thought of as a replacement for history books used in schools, which serve an entirely different purpose. I would like for my readers to relax and to follow history without having to take notes of names and dates. I promise too, that I won't ask you for them."
