Does the OP preclude prehistoical events? It seems that for example if some prehistorical events hadn't occurred, we wouldn't have any historical events, no matter how important, if humans hadn't evolved or achieved civilisation. So isn't this a matter of the "chicken and the egg"?

Picking more modern events seems to me to be a bit shortsighted, to say the least.
