Privateer, so that if I make it to my old age I will have a country to return to and live out my retirement.

Do you?
wonder what the proportion of pirates who made money was compared to those who got the end of the rope?

Also, the transition from privateer to pirate is a rather simple one, simply switch out your flag and never return to your home port. So if I should decide to become a simple pirate later, the option remains open.

There may be a fine line, but still there is a line. And Kidd crossed the line. While he started legally, with Letters of Marque, eventually he turned rogue.

I don't like being on ships in general: too much ondulations, bad smell and disease everywhere...
If I have to, I'd choose being a pirate: more booty in general(since you can attack even ships of nations not listed on the letter of marque), plus the booty of female pirates (it's better to have them close, or you mighr risk waking up with a cutlass in your back)

Realistically the life of the pirate was not that great:
A small chance of getting rich for a very low life expentancy(death in battle, death penalty for your crimes, stds, starving to death on a desert island, drowning, sharks food, infections...)
