It's so hard I like the all, except for the economic one. Grrr, what to pick. I like the conquest tales of Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar and other great warlords. I'm am simply in love with the way wars were fought during the 18th and 19th century. But I also like political change. I enjoy reading about Absolutism in France under the Bourbons, the 1789 revolution and later revolutions in France and elsewhere in Europe in the 19th century, and also I like the way how different forms of state work and which ones are more efficient, successful etc. I can read hours and hours about heroic figures such as William of Orange, Napoleon Bonaparte, Michiel de Ruyter etc, but also fascinating rulers as Louis XIV, XV, XVI of France, Napoleon III, William III of Orange, Victoria, George III etc. And culture, I love to comparise different cultures, where they came from and how they formed into the modern day ones. How cultures rose and fell, how the influenced the world and which ones were the most succesful and still see today.

You see, it's just to much for me. But if I have to pick an order of these five things it would be:

1. Political/diplomatic
2. Military
3. Biographies of major figures
4. Cultural (history of thoughts and ideas, cultural innovation)
5. Economical

To be honest, we can have these distinctions as we like, but I prefer history as it is - an amalgamation of the lot. Sure, when one reads (in the British sense) or researches history, it's often in a pigeon-holed category; nonetheless, I've found myself - and know plenty of other scholars who do it - becoming increasingly interdisciplinary even as our fields of research grow more specific.

I still find it easiest to get through a book on military history. But I stopped seeing the past in these kinds of categories years ago, and heartily second Fourteen's interdisciplinary approach.
