Well, don't get me wrong. I do welcome Turkey in NATO [I'm ready to defend it from Syrian leadership ... as Turkey has requested to the Alliance], as I would welcome it in EU.

I was making reference to the general feeling that today seems to influence the general attitude about the relationships among "Western" and "Muslim" powers.

The Franco-Ottoman alliance of 1536 between king François I and sultan Suleyman Kanuni came as some surpirise to the Christian world.

If I'm not wrong, probably that reference to "Austria-Hungary" is focused on the WW I, not on WW II and the Axis ...

I don't really think that the bad relations is because of religion, but instead because of politics and oil.

Concerning Hitler and Stalin; the alliance of the West with the Soviets could be just equally surprising(though it obviously made sense). Considering before WWII they were staunch foes, and after the war became bitter enemies in the Cold War.

Sure, we can think to a quite particular situation just about Turkey and surrounding powers.

Today Turkey is connected by strict economical linkages with Italy and Russia [someone talks about a kind of "geopolitical bow" Rome-Ankara-Moscow], based on oil and natural gasses [intercontinental pipelines projects included].

But in the same time Russia and Turkey are on opposite sides regarding Syria [with Turkish authorities even blocking Russian airplanes transporting "equipments" to Syrian allies ...].
