A few online sites, and even some books, have stated two completely different sects of Natives by name. Which one, either Arawaks witch seems to be the most mentioned, or the Taino (Lucayans), did Columbus truly encounter on his 1492 voyage?

Thoughts?

A note: in Italy, in our history books, we tend to put also the Taino in the linguistic group of the Arawak.

In any case, our version is that they were Arawak.

The Taino were diffused in the Great Antilles and in the Bahamas. This is the "traditional" version, it would be interesting to hear the opinion of researchers who made works about the geographical diffusion of this and that group.

Eisentrout30 first welcome to the nightmarish world of Native American Linguists,

The Taino is a Arawakan Language north branch of the Arawakan Language Ta-Arwakan.
But the Taino Language (Arawakan)had a number of dialects all Taino and (Arawkan) but with a certain number of differences

Baicawa Cayaba Cubaba Eyeri Lucayo
Lucayo dialect has n where other dialects have r.
The Lucayo or Lucayans was a branch of the Taino that lived in the Bahamas (Western Taino branch) and they Language and Culture was different from the Classical Tainos of Hispaniola but still they are Tainos.

In Another words the Lucayans are Tainos and the Tainos are Arawaks
And its believed that the first tribe that Columbus encountered was the Lucayans in bahamas

A book about the Lucayans

Thank you all for clearing that up. The map will be rather helpful. No objections to me printing the map for future use?
